The theme of science week was ‘My Body’. This event was organised for FS1 students to explore and learn about their bodies along with their parents. They were engaged in various activities related to the human body parts such as reading stories, joining the puzzle pieces, creating a human skeleton, sorting healthy and unhealthy food, brushing teeth on the big dentures and making self-portraits using natural materials and mirrors. Dressed up as their favourite body part, students and parents enthusiastically participated in several hands-on activities. Parents uploaded pictures of their children participating in these activities on https://padlet.com/The_Winchester_School/fs1-science-day-my-body-healthy-me-and-my-environment-8regr5n8epr7xcvm

Students of Year 12 and 13 read stories for FS1 student during registration time. The children were all excited and engrossed in the reading sessions. Y12 and Y13 students asked questions and made the session interactive and fun for the little ones. FS1 children attended a session on healthy nutrition and lifestyle conducted by Dr. Yousra - the school doctor via Zoom. Children were educated about eating healthy food and bringing health food options in their lunch boxes as well as what they should do to have a healthy lifestyle - eg. reading, cycling, playing etc. rather than being on gadgets. Children were also given a demonstration on hand hygiene and the steps to follow when washing their hands which was conducted by American Hospital in FS area. Etiquette when sneezing / coughing and ways they should take care of hygiene was also demonstrated. "Embracing Differences, Embracing Peace - You have the power to make the world a more peaceful place, one smile, one hug, and one act of kindness at a time!” Peace day was established by the United Nations in 1981, to encourage the world to work together towards the goal of worldwide peace. FS1 students celebrated International Peace Day with enthusiasm and love, by dressing in white clothes to symbolize Peace. They sang a wonderful song on Peace with their classmates and participated in activities such as finger painting on doves, making doves out of paper plates and creating a Wreath of Peace out of flags representing the different nationalities of the children in the class. Children were encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas on how to spread peace. The buzz continued in the FS area and outdoor areas on the 4th day of English week with exhilarated parents and children. Parents enjoyed a carousel of activities and were engrossed and engaged in all the areas where they had to attentively listen to various environmental sounds by going on for listening walk, playing Mrs. Browning box game, discovering how different objects makes distinct sounds when tapped, striked or banged. They described the sounds of socks and shakers filled with noisy materials. The children developed vocabulary, phonetics skills and rhyming identification through their activity. Day 3 of English Week started with students from Year 5 and Year 6 reading stories for the little ones. They narrated stories that made children curious to know more and even answered questions that were asked after the story session ended. Day 2 of English week was rather exciting as Teachers dressed up as characters from the story which they read. Teacher enacted the stories to make it more interactive and children were thrilled to be a part of it. Children also took turns to enact the story themselves. Build strong foundations and discover the Power of Phonics with Your Child - The Reading and Phonics workshop was conducted for FS1 parents to provide them with helpful information, guidelines and resources that would facilitate them to be fruitfully engaged in their child’s learning. This was an excellent opportunity for parents as it outlined the different phases in phonics development as well as emphasis on reading, by familiarizing them with the basics of phonics and some useful phonetic terms. Parents had an interactive and fun session where they engaged in some of the activities to understand how children are taught in class. Parents were invited to ask questions and provide their feedback at the end of the workshop. FS1 English week commenced on 18th September with Outdoor reading activity where the children enjoyed listening to the story as well as read some books in different outdoor areas. |
